6 Things I Learned from 2020
2020 was an insane year all around. There were so many businesses that either folded or thrived in 2020. I would like to say I was one of those businesses that thrived. I have never been the type to boast about my income on social media or talk about the new things I bought from the new money that came in, but I would like to say I am living a comfortable life like I always have been. I definitely think I should aim higher though and no I don't have a vision board (yet), however, a Tesla is in my future!
1. Don't Sweat the Small Stuff
I got COVID-19 back in March and I totally believe it was because I was sweating the small stuff. I spent much of my time in my business knocking on the proverbial doors and getting people to care about what I do, more importantly trying to give value to people that "already have a team in place". Instead of getting people to find ME, I was spending more time trying to find THEM. This is all changing. I have already started to put the changes in place and I am going to be creating SMARTER content and not just content to push out.
2. Creating Space to SERVE others not PROMOTE.
I was originally taught to promote, promote, promote. Cause no one else will do it for you. The problem with this is that many people that you want to build a relationship with, will probably ignore your sales pitch. Many heart-centered businesses come from the place of service, not promotion. What am I doing that is different that helps other businesses? Let's see: I am a digital marketing maven with a specialty in social media marketing, with a spiritual twist. Many businesses that identify as spiritual or spiritually inclined, would want to work with me. What am I doing to help serve? I offer free masterclasses every single month. The latest one being Beginner's SEO for Spiritual Entrepreneurs. I also like to add value in blog posts like these, and in almost every single platform I am on.
3. Working Remotely is the Best Way to Go.
I work digitally, so remote work ain't no thang for me, however, it seems like the rest of the world is starting to catch up to this idea. My first real-world job was remote. I worked in an agency about two hours outside of Chicago. I worked from my own home, and it was great for the most part. The pay sucked but I got an incredible experience working in all areas of digital marketing. As I continued to regular 9-5 office work, I was confused as to why the work I was doing before wasn't already remote in these places as well.
It saves the company money
Communication is streamlined
Productivity is more efficient
Now that most of these companies are forced into working remotely, a lot of businesses are seeing the value of having remote teams. In this day and age if you can't hold a productive meeting on zoom, then you are probably not holding productive meetings in person.
4. Working Smarter Not Harder
If there is one thing I really learned this year it's that I was definitely not working smart. Creating content was ingrained in me and it was getting real tiring trying to come up with new content every single week. The truth of the matter is that I wasn't creating only ONE piece of content that is long-form and breaking that up into 5-6 pieces of content throughout the week. That's the smart way of doing it. The long-form content could be anything; podcast, blog post, an article you wrote, video, etc. All you need to do is take pictures or screen shares of that video or podcast (if it's a blog then create pictures and videos) and post them all over your social media for the week.
5. Don't Be Afraid to Fail!
Perfectionism was my middle name in 2020. I was so afraid of trying new things because I thought I was going to be bad at it. It turns out that is what being an entrepreneur is all about! You have to try and if you fail then you fail knowing that you tried your hardest. I was told recently that so much of what being an entrepreneur is about throwing noodles against a wall and seeing what sticks. You can't be afraid to throw the noodles.
Trying to market yourself on social media can be either a breeze or incredibly difficult depending on how much you use it. There's a lot of mindset that goes into selling yourself on social media too. If you are afraid of selling on social media, what is stopping you? For the longest time, I was afraid of using my own personal Facebook page (not my business page) to sell on social media. I was afraid of selling to my friends, but I realized I don't have to sell there all the time. I just needed to show my personality. The first rule of selling: people buy into YOU, not necessarily your services!
6. Build Out Multiple Streams of Income!
It's so important as an entrepreneur that you build out multiple streams of income. I learned all about the art of creating digital products through India Lindsey. I created four ebooks in 2020 and I started to sell them all on Gumroad. I am planning on building that store out a little more and also using my affiliate links for the many different products that I use like Dubsado. I also started to add more services like coaching and email marketing. You can't always depend on having one service do well all the time, especially in a year like 2020. Create and test out more services in the future, see what works and what doesn't! Take out what is not selling, and expand on what is selling.
