What Simone Biles Can Teach Us About Being Overworked
The 2021 Tokyo Olympics is underway and it’s a time to see who is the best in the world for their craft. Simone Biles is one of the most decorated and celebrated gymnasts of all time. She was expected to compete in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but due to having “the twisties”, which is a condition where a gymnast that is flying up in the air does not know where they are in the air. Simone had to withdraw herself from the games. Helen Elliot on Twitter stated “Biles said she had no idea where she was in the air after her vault. Felt her head wasn’t in it and feared she might get hurt and spoil teammates’ medal chances if she continued.” To me, this is a game-changer. While there were tons of comments on social media talking about Simone and her decision, some of them were negative. The negativity alluded to the fact that Kerri Strug had an injury but persevered,
Why Is This a Big Deal?
Biles is not the only one who has taken a break from their work in order to focus on their mental health. There are many people who have found themselves burned out and at risk of depression or anxiety as they try to juggle all aspects of their lives. Entrepreneurs who work for over 50 hours a week have a higher risk of developing mental health conditions as compared to those who work for less than 40 hours. This is because they are burdened with an increased workload that requires them to be constantly present and available on the job. They are also more prone to falling victim to workplace bullying, discrimination, and harassment. Overworking oneself can lead to burnout which causes chronic anxiety and depression. Working too hard also impacts the body in different ways - like by increasing cortisol levels, which leads to various physical health problems such as high blood pressure or diabetes.
Low Vibrational Energy on Social Media
With the recent Simone Biles comments being made on social media, it’s hard to deal with as a spiritual being. There is no secret to dealing with low vibrational energy on social media. All that needs to be done is to have a deep understanding of what it is that you are trying to achieve on the platform and stay true to your values in your interactions. Social media can be a very tricky place. If you are not careful, you will end up in a downward spiral. However, there are ways to avoid this problem and increase the vibes on your social media accounts.
I always recommend to:
Curate your feed with positivity (join groups on Facebook that are nothing but positive, this might take a while to weed out, but you will find them!)
Unfollow the negative people.
Add value to your own feed
Block if necessary
Taking Time Out for Yourself
Self care is an important aspect of entrepreneurship. It can be difficult to balance work and self care. However, businesses that don't prioritize self care will suffer. Some entrepreneurs might not think they have time for it. But, the truth is that if you are not taking time for yourself, then you are not spending enough time on your business and this will cause problems in the end. Entrepreneurs need to take time for themselves in order to grow their business and stay happy.
The self care routine that every entrepreneur should be doing is taking time for themselves. It’s important when every day is a battle and the hours are long to take time out for yourself, whether that’s going for a walk, reading, or talking to friends.
The number one thing that helps me is taking time out from my phone and social media. Getting off of my phone and computer before bed helps me relax because I know I’ve taken some time away from work before sleeping.
Self-care routines are important for entrepreneurs because they can help prevent burnout. They help entrepreneurs stay healthy and happy so they can maintain their enthusiasm for what they do and not become overworked or stressed out easily.
It’s Time to Delegate Your Tasks
You don't have to do everything by yourself. Building a team is important because it can help you become more efficient and effective. The purpose of building a team is to allow you to delegate tasks that might be beyond your skill set or expertise. It should also allow you to work smarter instead of just harder. t's important to know when you need help with a task in order to maximize your productivity. Sometimes, delegating tasks can be the difference between success and failure of a project. It is important to delegate tasks that you are not good at, or don't enjoy doing. Delegating tasks will help you avoid wasting time on things that may not be necessary for success, and will allow you more time for the things that are actually important.
I have a team overseas that I delegate my work to in case I can’t get to a particular project that day. It’s been so helpful and such a stress reliever to have a team I can trust to handle some of my work on the backend and sometimes on the front end. I highly recommend every single entrepreneur out there to have a virtual assistant after a year you’ve been in business. Speaking of….
